The story behind our album artwork

Hey guys, Dave here. I get asked a lot about the artwork for our album ‘Under the Brightest Lights’, so thought i’d go into a little more detail about it (stop reading now if you don’t want to be bored senseless).

The album title (as well as being a lyric in ‘Contender’) is a bit of a play on words of us obviously being on stage sweating it out under lights and being where we want to be. The reason we chose that line as the title is primarily because of the themes explored throughout the album – what I took most from Graz’s lyrics was the concept, or at least the all-too-real awareness of time, and I guess on a broader scale, existentialism and finding your place in the world when opportunities to change your life don’t often present themselves. And I guess even the flip side of that being that everything, everywhere, is potentially everyone’s for the taking.

So when it came to designing the artwork for the album I tried to draw on these themes rather than playing to the obvious stage lighting double-meaning, and thought about how we could portray this on the largest scale. My interpretation of the title was us, all of us, no matter where you are in the world, being under the same stars – the very brightest of all lights, finding our way through life and overcoming whatever personal, spiritual or even literal mountains that are in front of us.

Hell, if you really want to get into it there’s even inspiration from Oscar Wilde in there;

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.”

(This quote was actually painted on my childhood friend Anthony’s kitchen ceiling and I always thought about it growing up).

Anyway – that’s it. In a nutshell, it’s an interpretation of Graz’s lyrics about freaking out about not knowing what the future holds, which, in Lacey’s case is something we’re actually pretty happy about. Having this album is a massive achievement for all of us, and who knows what path it’ll set the four of us on.. That’s pretty exciting. All we know is that it could be the start of something great, and that’s all down to you guys helping us get to where we are.

Let us know what you think of the artwork!

Dave
